Chapter 16

GWENNY

Lifting my face to the night breeze swirling in the open passenger window, I close my eyes and my lips curve. I set Levi off balance with my suggestion, but I’m proud of myself. I felt like the old me—outgoing and outspoken. Who I was before Em left and the accident happened.

A summer fling with Levi. I can’t believe those words came out of my mouth. Yet I want a life. I’ve spent the past year existing. What better way to start living again than with a hottie like Levi? We’re secluded here on Anna Island. Other than a few squealing girls at the carnival, it’s been fairly low key.

No complications. Temporary. Something to quiet the chaos in my brain, or replace it with other more welcome thoughts.

Yet it had felt good to say Rose’s name and to admit a few things to Levi about my parents. The events leading up to her accident cut deep. Maybe talking about her with someone who doesn’t know her is the way to go. It’ll keep her alive in my thoughts. Because that’s not her lying in that bed. Yes, not talking about her seems wrong. Like I’m being forced to forget she’s still alive.

The car slows and I open my eyes to see Levi pulling into The Pepper House. He cuts down the long driveway, veering left around the fountain to park in the guest slots. I catch sight of the orange cat who is usually perched on the fountain but tonight he (or maybe she) stalks through the shadows, probably hunting something.

Through the main windows, soft yellow light spills out. Two women who are staying in the other cottage sit at the game table, sipping wine and playing cards with Tilly and Domino.

I glance at the car’s clock. It’s barely ten.

Levi cuts the engine, but he doesn’t open his door. Instead, he shifts to look at me. “Just double-checking, you are eighteen, correct?”

“Yes, brand new eighteen as of a few weeks ago.”

He grins. “Happy belated.”

“Thanks.” Interesting question, but I get it. Him being who he is, he probably has underage girls throwing themselves at him all the time. He has to be careful.

The dome light flicks on as he opens the driver’s door and steps out. He traded the sporty convertible for a four-door sedan. A sweet gesture that has me feeling guilty. I mean, he’s twenty and famous and he’s driving something an old man would.

For me.

As I unclip my seatbelt, he rounds the hood and opens my door. I take his offered hand. “Did your Mom teach you to open doors and hold chairs out for girls?”

“She sure did. Do you like it?”

“I do.”

He closes the door, and instead of walking toward The Pepper House’s main entrance, he cuts down the side. Oh boy, he’s taking me to his cottage.

But now what? Just because I threw the words “summer fling” out doesn’t mean I’m ready to go all the way. Maybe I should clarify. We did say no games or lies.
